How We Started

Back in 2016, our founder noticed something concerning. Friends and colleagues weren’t sleeping well. Kids were distracted in school. People felt constantly stressed by notifications. But here’s the thing — everyone still needed technology. The problem wasn’t the tools themselves. It was the way we’re using them.

So we started Balans Digital B.V. with a simple idea: what if we could teach people to use technology on their own terms? Not with shame or guilt, but with practical strategies that actually work. We’ve spent the last eight years building resources, running workshops, and working with schools across the Netherlands to make this happen.

We’ve learned a lot. Digital wellness isn’t about willpower — it’s about understanding your habits and redesigning your environment. Screen time management isn’t punishment. It’s freedom. And technology balance? That’s different for everyone. There’s no perfect formula. Just what works for you.

Three Pillars of Balance

Balans Digital B.V. builds digital wellness through three interconnected practices that we’ve tested with thousands of people.

Awareness

First, you’ve got to understand your own patterns. How much time are you actually spending? What triggers the urge to check? We help you see what’s really happening, without judgment.

Design

Then we redesign. Changing notification settings. Reorganizing your home screen. Building better routines. Small changes that add up to real shifts in how you interact with your devices.

Sustainability

Finally, making it stick. This isn’t a 30-day challenge. We focus on habits you can maintain because they actually fit your life, not against it.

Why We Exist

Technology isn’t bad. But the way it’s designed — with infinite scroll, algorithmic feeds, and attention-grabbing notifications — creates real challenges. Especially for young people whose brains are still developing.

We’re not anti-tech. We’re pro-human. We believe people deserve tools that work for them, not against them. That means understanding screen time management as a life skill. That means treating digital wellness with the same seriousness we give to physical health.

And here’s what we’ve found: when people take control of their technology use, everything else gets better. Sleep improves. Relationships strengthen. Focus sharpens. Kids do better in school. Adults feel less anxious.
